NYC Apartment Tour

I always see moving as starting your next chapter in life.

I always see moving as starting your next chapter in life.

The weeks leading up to the big move, I had been planning and organizing how I wanted to structure my new home. Some of the challenges were trying to coordinate furniture sizes to wall space, and figuring out how I wanted to set up the office and bed. I sketched out several layouts for the space, and each time, I would get a little closer to what I wanted. It helped talking things out with my dad, who did a phenomenal job mounting and hanging the majority of everything on my walls. But one month later, here we are.

Without further ado, I’m excited to walk you through my new New York City apartment.

BEDROOM / LIVING AREA

This of course, is my favorite area. For two reasons — 1) the lighting is spot-on in the mornings and afternoons. I can even see the sunset with the cityscape in the background and it’s so beautiful, especially after it rains. I’ll talk more about that further down in the blog post. 2) I spend all of my time in this area, so I needed it to feel like a safe haven aka my comfort space.

In my previous blog post here, I showed you my new gallery wall. There’s been a couple new arrangements since that post, due to a print that didn’t arrive in time for the partnership, but this is the finalized gallery wall. The prints are all linked in the previous blog post here.

I’m extremely happy with the way it turned out. I had sketched out a layout for my dad and he got right to work. Some of the frames aren’t the same size, so you’ll notice the slight uneven sizing, but it honestly looks great to me.

In my previous two apartments, I never had a TV. Not because of space, but because I never saw the use for one. I hardly watch TV, and when I do, it’s to watch Netflix or church online on Sunday mornings. When I moved, I thought out a plan to incorporate a TV in there. I got so used to watching Netflix on my iPad or my iMac, but I knew it was time for a change. My dad originally tried to mount my TV on the wall, but it ended up not holding well, so I purchased this TV mount that swivels from the couch to the bed, in case I ever want to watch from two locations.

I spent a lot of time searching for an area rug that would fit in front of the couch. I ended up finding one that I sort of liked and long story short, the sizing was way off. The rug took up the entire area and more. I ended up returning it and never found one that I liked after that. However, I do like my old white rug I’ve kept up with four years ago, in that spot. So it shall stay… until my mind changes again. Not to mention, a big issue with that rug is Pepper and Luna are constantly tearing the ends and there are always fuzzy pieces all over my floor. #catproblems

I had to include this photo in the post because I found my girls Pepper and Luna sitting on their cat tree like this overlooking the view and I thought it depicted their bond perfectly. Sometimes they’re playful and chase each other around the apartment, and sometimes they’re loving and take care of each other.

BALCONY

Ah. My second favorite area in the apartment. In my podcast episode where I shared my apartment testimony, I talked about how I found this apartment and my initial thoughts when I first saw it. It was the view that did it for me. The episode talks a lot about not settling (relatable for more than just apartments, also with relationships), and how things happen when you least expect them. Definitely worth listening to, if you haven’t already!

Every day when I sit or stand out here on the balcony, I can’t help but smile and feel so much gratitude for what and who I have in my life. A city view can do that for you. It can remind you of all the hardships you’ve endured, the happy memories you’ve lived through, and how this City can chew you up and spit you out, and you will still make it through.

This is a wide-lens view. I’ll typically watch the sunset form this area because you can kind of make out the west side from beyond the buildings.

I love that this balcony overlooks a street view, but you can also spot the East Rive in the distance.

KITCHEN

My friends already know this, but I am so happy to finally have a real kitchen. My previous kitchen in the old apartment was pretty small. I barely had room for a kitchen table and there were no counters. This one gives me a little more room with more kitchen storage space and a cute little dishwasher.

Trying to figure out what to do with this kitchen island was challenging. We turned it every single way to figure out how to place it without it being in the way. Because my fridge door opens backwards — I know, I’m still not fully used to it — this was the best option. My dad took off the ends of the kitchen island and I like that I still have a place to eat INSIDE my kitchen rather than using my office desk.
